CHARLESTON DAY

Today we will fly to historic Charleston, SC.  Our plan is to fly into KLRO, Mt. Pleasant, SC which is only a 20 min drive into the city.  Those who want to tour Patriots’ Point and the aircraft carrier Yorktown can take transport there and then take a water taxi to the historic district to meet the group for a late lunch.

In the downtown area you can take a carriage ride or stroll through the city open air market, tour antebellum homes or “shop till you drop” among the many antique shops, stores, etc. in the historic district and open air market.

A late group lunch will be at a restaurant in the heart of the historic district (to be determined but guaranteed outstanding!)

We will depart Charleston in time for everyone to return to Oak Island before dark.

Once again, local activities will be available for those not flying to Charleston.

Dinner Friday night on your own at any of the excellent restaurants in the Southport/Oak Island area.

Your arrival package will include a list of suggested restaurants.

Based on comments, suggestions and reality, I am making some changes to the Charleston itenary. We now have two 15 passeger vans for transport. The plan as it stands now is to use the vans to ferry everyone to Patriot's Point. There you will have the option of touring the naval museum, Yorktown, etc. or taking the water taxi across the Cooper River to the historic district of Charleston. This will give you optimum flexibility in deciding how long you want to stay at the Yorktown vs how long you want to dedicate to the city.

We have CANCELLED the group lunch in Chaleston. It simply put too many time constraints on people to be somewhere at a given time. You will be "on your own" for lunch in Charleston. My feeling is this will give you the flexibility to grab a quick bite if that's what you want or have a more formal sit down "low country" meal. There are more restaurants and of a greater variety and price range than one can imagine in Charleston. Most are within walking distance of the historict district. Everything from hot wings and pizza (?) to very sophisticated low country entrees. I for one will be eating at Magnolia's and anyone who wishes to join me is very welcome. As you walk the city you will see many many fine restaurants.

We will set a "drop dead" time for the last shuttle bus back from Patriots Point to the airport. If you miss that, you will have to call a taxi. BTW we will be flying into KLRO.

I don't have all the details worked out just yet but it's looking pretty solid. The water taxi dock is on ~ 1-2 min walk from the Yorktown and only 3-4 blocks on the historic district side. This should work out nicely. Water taxi capacity is 49 people so not a problem. It runs every hour on the hour from Patriots' Point and on the half from the historic district. I talked to one of the taxi captains by cell tonite. Seems like an entertaining guy, very helpful.
