CPS Newsletter: The 2015 Annual Gathering Announcement Issue!

Fort Collins, Colorado @ KFNL

Airplanes are made for going places. Usually, we own them for that reason. All the care, the training, the preventative maintenance, the honing of skills, the currency, and the constant immersion is pointed towards being able to use the airplane well, and for a serious purpose.

Nothing is approached with as much anticipation as a trip to some new destination. The planning, the skill which you bring to your piloting, the arrangements and of course the anticipation of adventure keep us all looking forward to the next trip. Nothing is as exciting as starting out on a journey in your Cessna. With Winter just half way done, the planning for your summer flying destination should soon become a priority.

Have we ever got a destination for you!

The voting has concluded and the Membership has decided that the 2015 Annual Gathering will be held in Fort Collins Colorado at KFNL. Steve Wolf has volunteered to be our host for what promises to be yet another in a terrific series of CPS events. We thank Steve as well as both Dave Kalwishky and Mike Jesch who also forwarded their hometowns as destinations for consideration.

KFNL has that spectacular Colorado scenery and is centrally located which should allow easy access for the majority of our Membership. This gathering should be a blast.

Dates for the gathering are Thursday June 25 through Sunday June 28 2015. Lead hotel has been determined and it looks like we’ll be putting up our feet at the Embassy Suites in Fort Collins.

Those that have attended one of our CPS Annual Gatherings can attest to the unique character that runs throughout. Friends new and old gather under a common banner of camaraderie. Aviation and friendship are the operative words and no one is trying to sell you anything! Each destination offers an unique opportunity for local attractions, scenery and adventure enroute, and that special feeling that accompanies a gathering of decent souls with much in common.

Families, Friends, pilots and non-pilots all are presented with a wide variety of events to enjoy. Uncommon in aviation, our CPS events are always sculpted to ensure both pilots and passengers have fun. While there’s always some on airport activities, the truth is that the gatherings have always been consciously crafted to be very inclusive of the families and the non-aviators. Everyone you bring is going to thank you for being part of this gathering..

Steve has secured a block of rooms at The Embassy Suites at a nice discounted rate for our stay. Click on this link to secure your reservation. https://aws.passkey.com/event/13514514/owner/11594015/home We’ll have an itinerary of events plus dining and rental car information available in due course. Keep up w/ the website for the latest information.

Hope to see you there…

AOPA Open-Letter regarrding ADS-B:

As we 'went to press' with this issue, AOPA had penned an open letter to the FAA demanding immediate steps to lower the barriers to ADS-B equipage. Released to the public on 1/23/15, AOPA had reached out to several touchstone groups within the Aviation industry as co-signers of this important document.

Signatories included Directors of several prestigious organizations such as: E.A.A., National Air Transport Association (NATA), National Business Aviation Association (NBAA), American Bonanza Society, and (we are pleased to report) your own Cessna Pilots Society.

Your CPS Board of Directors.

Member Profile - Dave Kalwishky on his CPS experience:

I’ve been a member of CPS since the early days. What I enjoy about CPS is the fellowship with others that share my passion for aviation and Cessna aircraft. It’s as though I have a big extended family, I’ve made some lasting friendships here that I would not trade for the world. If you have a problem or a question you’ll get answers and you won’t be made to feel stupid because you did know. Many members spend time helping others, it exemplifies what my experience has been with other pilots and aircraft owners, friendly and willing to go out of their way to help and make you feel welcome.

I started flying when I was 15, soloed at 16 and obtained my private pilot’s certificate at 17, I am now 47. I’ve got around 2,500 hours and I’ve owned five planes. My current 182 was purchased from another CPS member.

Like many others at CPS, I am also a member of EAA, specifically to fly Young Eagles. To me, that’s where the satisfaction comes from, being able to provide an experience for a youngster that he or she will probably remember for the rest of their life. I also want to help further general aviation and get young people interested in it so maybe someday they will want to take up flying and obtain a pilot’s certificate. Keeping the pilot population strong is very important to me.
I’m also a volunteer pilot for Angel Flight Central and Lifeline Pilots. I figured if I was going to be out flying and burning fuel I may as well help someone in need. As a volunteer pilot for these organizations I fly people to cities where their doctors are. I live in Iowa so most of my trips are to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN or at the University Hospitals in Iowa City, IA. When I first started flying people in 2003 I was really surprised at how far people had to travel to get to a specialist and the lack of highly skilled medical care in parts of the county. This is the flying accomplishment I am the most proud.

There is a popular quote that says “You can’t live a perfect day until you do something for someone who will never be able to repay you.” It’s true.

---David Kalwishky

‘NOTAMS’ is the newsletter of the Cessna Pilots Society.  “CPS” is an all-volunteer group of aviation enthusiasts who maintain a forum for the unofficial exchange of ideas relating to technical, operational, and functional issues relating specifically to Cessna aircraft.  We provide a venue whereby the members may also choose to discuss destinations, and other subjects that touch on the aviation lifestyle.  No political discussions are permitted. The daily workings of CPS are overseen by a Board of Directors that also moderate the forum if needed. We also welcome members that fly other brands who wish to participate for the friendship, and unique access to a diverse set of good minds.   Dedicated owners, operators, AMT’s and all aviation enthusiasts are welcome at CPS.

The Cessna Pilots Society is not affiliated or endorsed by Cessna/Textron Corporation or its subsidiaries. All Cessna model designations and models are the property/trademark of Cessna/Textron.
