Our 2023 Get Together was an absolute hoot. An excellent venue, terrific hosts, beautiful surroundings, and the company of friends. Those that attended were generous with their pictures and PIREPS, and the stories of the travel adventure were well documented as well.

OSHKOSH 2023: From all reports, Osh was a success again this year. Weather challenges were minor in comparison to prior year's maelstroms. Leisel and Eric Finley are hosting our 2023 gathering in Jackson CA. Clear your calander and make this event if at all possible. Everything you're read in the past, the pictures, the friendships forged? All true. The Finley's have a terrific itinerary planned. KJAQ will be our base of operations.

We have made it through 2020. A full year of our lives is behind us and never to be lived again. 'Was it lived fully ?' is a question for each to ask of ourselves...

2021 is here, and has an as yet unfulfilled promise, but it will only be what we make of it.

Included below are the on-going stories of your fellow Aviators. Despite restrictions and obstacles, they continue to improve, upgrade, and keep an eye on proficiency.

Aviators need to assess risk before every flight, and every decision. Where, how often, and to what standard do we train? To what standard do we maintain our skills? How do we choose to maintain our aircraft?

We also need to recognize that there is a substantial cost to allowing our skills to go unused for any period of time. "Rust Never Sleeps". This month's issue of "NOTAMS" kicks off with a click-through to a thread started by a respected member of the CPS family who frankly confronts a discussion of the rust that crept in during some involuntary down time. This is worth a read, and some personal reflection as we begin a new year.

Aviaiton and aviators being a self selecting and very small sector of society kind of naturally cleve together for mutual understanding and support. We're not 'misfit toys' as a great deal of personal discipline and the ability to reason are natural foundation requirements for entry.

We understand that some projects are not going to be easy, or convenient. We accept that there is a degree of hard work and sacrifice required to achieve anything of merit or benefit.

We watch our brother and sister airmen restore innumerable 'project' airplanes. We cheer as they acquire new ratings, and love when they visit new places they gratiously share with us on these pages. Their words often take us along for the ride, and there are times when the pictures of the places, the faces, and especially the before/after pictures just touch our collective hearts.

In those moments, our self selecting very small sector of society has reason to rejoice.

A sincere wish for everyone reading along to enjoy a New Year full of promise.
You and your contributions to the discussions are what makes CPS special.

Thanksgiving 2020 has come and gone. With Christmas and New Year's being within sight many of us are thinking 'good riddence' to 2020 which has been an interesting year to say the least. With 'Big Tube' travel wrought with restrictions, and after a year of sequester/solitude, many reading along here could be considering a 'holiday' flight to see family and friends this December.

If you've been flying regularly, it's a great idea. Current and sharp is different from 'legal' as we all know. If not, get with a CFII and get some time in rubbing off the rust. Take reasonable precautions but do get current before setting out on any venture. (please)

From a health and isolation considerations, few things are more ideal for safe travel than your Cessna airplane. No standing in the lines at the hub airport, no TSA fondling, no runny nosed six year old kicking the back of your seat from Tullahoma to Boise. Instead, you're with folks 'in your bubble' so no extra C-19 exposure risks there. A couple alcohol wipes for the crew car steering wheel, a mask, and you're good to go across the country as necessary.

While 2020 has been an overall bust, we shouldn't be sitting around 'waiting' for that is wasting what is now going on a full year of our lives. While the bulk of the public is tied to their chairs, we have the ability to travel safely, and we all know that tomorrow is not promised. These may be strange days, but we will never have these days to live over.

"East is odd, and West is even odder"....

My first CFI resorted to the above in an effort to reach into his students' brains to teach basic altitudes for direction of flight.   With all the power of a 1/2 amp fuse, the inrush of current turned on the first of a series of dim bulbs, and that's how we slowly build our foundation of aviation knowledge.

We learn as we 'stick with it'. Those early days of drinking from a fire hose slowly seem lesser intimidating as we assimilate the lingo, and gently ease into the realization that this is a journey that may in fact take a lifetime. A few years later, we celebrate the wisdom of that early decision to stick with it.   If we are fortunate, we learn enough so that we're not the overt danger to ourselves and our neighbors as was that novice trying to grasp the nuances of odd/even flight directions in those early days when he/she was so overtasked that had they been asked for a stick of gum in steady stable cruise, their head would have exploded.

With time and a lot of effort, somehow we are no longer the completely empty vessels we once were. We may not know a great deal, but we know enough so that we might be of some help to the next student of the craft.   It's one thing to sign up for a Type Club that has the word 'Society' on the banner, and another to take a moment to be a Participating Active Member. To be a part of a Society.

Just a word of thanks and a compliment to those that helped others along and still do to this day.   Aviation has a wonderful tradition of passing along what we know, so that the next guy need not make every mistake. Watch one, do one, teach one....

So we move from Summer to Fall. We get some gentle reminders of the change in seasons on our first trip to the airport when the temperatures require a sweatshirt for a comfortable pre-flight followed by that surprising boost in performance when the airplane literally jumps off the ground, inspired by the extra power available. Cooler temps, more performance, and a Jackie Gleason-like "and awayyyyy we go"!

It's been a strange year to put it gently. If you've not been flying much or at all, now is a terrific time to really consider the return to the cockpit and to currency. Most of the USA still has decent light available through most of the day, but that window slowly closes as we move towards the winter solestice. When Winter hits in full force, you want to be sharp and ready since the weather may interrupt your plans to catch up on those landings, manuvers, and overall ability to meld your skills with the aircraft capabilities so that your full team is on the same page.

Some will need to brush up and that could mean engaging an instructor. The confines of a GA aircraft do not permit social distancing so just to play it safe, most folks will consider (and some might insist on) a masks-on policy for all parties. You might need to play with the mic distances on the headsets or set the squelch break point on older audio panels, but that is the work of but a few seconds.
Don't be surprised or disappointed if there is some mild rust on the tools, for that is the nature of the beast. It polishes off quickly, and nicely. Below that bit of grit lies your talents, hard won, patient and potent.

Those that have been flying regularly have been finding spotlessly clean FBOs and personnel that have welcomed their visits. Fuel is relatively inexpensive across the bulk of the USA at this time so while Cross Country travel has some additional considerations to take into account, this Fall presents us with some unique opportunities. The sky still belongs to us, the people we meet along the way are often remarkable for their willingness to be of help to the wayward traveler, and remind us to bring out our best when strangers cross our paths.

Some of our favorite spots are suffering w/ the revenue from planned events having been lost to the C-19 mess. Two in particular are close to our CPS family. The guys at Old Rhinebeck Aerodrome and the folks at Triple Tree in SC have issues gentle requests for some assistance. Old Rhinebeck was a big attraction when Bruce C. hosted our gathering in Poughkeepsie a few years back and Triple Tree Aerodrome has drawn accolades from every flyer that has ever attended for its low key but high service approach to fly in camping.

Op Ed: We are seeing an occasional disruption to the expected reliability of our evolving glass cockpits. This month we have seen approaches missing from the Garmin DataBase, and Aspen's w/ in-flight reset issues. No Certificated avionics manufacturer can claim absolute 100% reliability, but when these 'giants' of the industry have issues, we should all remember somewhere deep down that nothing is infailable. Having some kind of Attitude back-up system up and running especially when IMC may seem like a belt and suspenders approach, but it is really quite conservative. If the backup Attitude system on your iPAD relies on a Blue-Tooth or WiFi signal from your prime navigator, you may lose that capability when the system goes wonky or resets. Plan ahead, and practice w/ your back-up system....

Safely because our Members are smart, and because safety considerations are nothing new to aviators. Covid-19 concerns add a certain degree of additional challenge, but nothing that is a 100% show stopper.

The Summer is quickly blending into Fall. Soon, the weather will be that perfect 'Fall Cool' that is so wonderful for distance travel by GA.   You're cool at altitude, the sky is friendly, there are places to see, and folks on the ground are again welcoming you openly.

Sad News: Destinations continue to take a hit as Triple Tree Cancelled their late Summer avaition love fest.

The CPS 2021 Gathering: Destination hotels are dealing with being pre-booked for 2021 dates and under extra pressure from those w/ plans this year that simply pushed them into 2021 will cause some ripple effect, specifically that the CPS 2021 gathering can no longer be hosted by the Atnip family next year as there's simply no place for us to stay.

As we move towards the end of the year and there is hopefully some clarification on the trends for the Covid-19 Pandemic, the Forum Board will open the discussion forums for a 2021 destination.

If YOU have a great idea of a good spot to hold our 2021 gathering, please contact anyone on the Forum Board with your ideas. We'ld love to hear from you as we all want to resume this event in the coming year if at all possible.

TRAVEL ADVISORIES: Some States are practicing Scarlett Letter Law (after a fashion) and 'requiring' transients from C-19 hot-spot areas to self quarrantine, typically for 14 days. Thus far it has been voluntary but these situations are fluid and the prudent aviator makes him/herself aware of all possible information that might affect the flight. Don Tedrow started the discussion here.

Whelen Lay-Offs: In what is likely to be a theme we hear repeated for a while, Whelen announced some lay-offs this week. While none of us individually can do much to effect the big picture, let's remember to support those that have supported CPS whenever possible so that the bloodletting is minimized. Mid Air Collision:

Our own Dave Phifer and his son Luke were on Lace Coeur D'Alene when a mid-air collision occured. While they did not witness the event at the moment of impact, they turned at the sound and saw the debris falling from the sky. Luke and Dave immediately went to the scene in their boat, but no rescue was possible. A sobering first hand account that gives us some food for thought on keeping that eagle eye peeled.

Montauk Swim Fat Man Challenge

Bruce Spears bought a 182 on the opposite coast, flew it home, and documented the journey nicely. Even had some cool pix. He did this knowing that on his return he would have to self-isolate for 14 days which goes to prove that every airman you know has a loose thread or two somewhere in his make-up. The Wolansky crew has been seen all about New England. This is the White Cloud Diner in MA and we know they were recently spotted at Bethany's on Block Island. Word is that right now they're in the Bahamas and in their own 182. Nicely done folks.

The Forum Board in conjunction with our host James Atnip announced the 2020 Gathering has been cancelled in light of the restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 Crisis.

The Coronavirus issues have presented unprecedented challenges. Even though things are starting to ease up, we realize that everyone has taken a tough body blow. Many of us have lost loved ones, some have faced major lifestyle changes, financial hardship, and a once secure future has been called into question for many. Despite this the tone on the CPS Forums remains upbeat and optomistic for the greater part. This speaks to the depth and character of those that form the backbone of our Society.

This brings out either your best, or less. An opportunity to shine for most everyone reading along here.

We salute those who are able to assist in their communities, and thank them for thinking beyond themselves.

While many folks are having trouble keeping current, medical certificates and inspections are expiring at the end of every month, and the FAA is giving SOME ground depending on your operation. Read SFAR Issued re- Covid-19. Read it carefully as there are lots of potholes. Flying Much?
Many folks are under a mandated ‘Stay at Home’ order. Others have been advised to socially distance to help stop the spread. The latter group can and is flying, but the flying has changed (for now). We don’t want to rust away or allow this pandemic to ride rough over every facet of our lives.

Your Fellow Members have been sharing their flights, and their stay-at-home strategies in their usual friendly manner. Folks that care about you are not huddling behind drawn curtains, but are instead waiting it out in a manner they’ve deemed appropriate. Stay strong people, keep your mind in the game if you cannot fly just now. Remember to take care of those you can.

Now more than ever, flights count. Humanitarian flying is one of the areas that have had some time requirements temporarily extended. it’s a great time to be sharing your love of flight while doing something decent for a world that has taken a few body blows of late.

Skeleton ATC: The Realities of ATC-0 (ATC Naught)

Destinations:
It may seem crazy to speak about Destinations these days, but it is not crazy to plan for the return of normalcy. In that vein, we again encourage you to consider attending the CPS fly-in currently STILL ON SCHEDULE for Cody Wyoming.

We all recognize that this event will require a return to normalcy in the wake of the Corona Virus Pandemic. Indicators are that April/May should see this event 'peaking' before scaling down. While nothing is assured, we are keeping CPS 2020 on the front burner and on-schedule thus far.

As the -19 virus situation evolves, we have each come to recognize that we need to remain flexible, and understanding about event schedules. Changes if needed will be announced well in advance so reservations can be changed if necessary.

We all need a reason to look forward to the coming days. The incessant doom and gloom that is so pervasive needs to be countered with hope and optimism. Few things are as hopeful as a destination event worthy of your attendance.

NOTHING is as much fun as gathering with your fellow CPS Members under a common roof, and taking in sights reserved for those that 'dare' to ply the sky. Make your 2020 Destination for your Family and Friends the CPS Cody WY event.

We find ourselves in the midst of an unique time in the history of the Nation and the World. Coronavirus and Covid-19 are now terms that are part of the daily litany of every American. Commercial air carriers have cut back or cancelled as much as is possible, and a visit to your local airport shows less traffic than normal.   Most of us involved w/ CPS use both modes and appreciate each for their attributes.

While the big Airports and Airlines will likely enjoy some support from the Federal and possibly their State agencies, the smaller fields are likely to see less resources brought to bear. As invested stakeholders, we should do what is practical to ensure the GA infrastructure is not left without means. Many of us utilize small (often one-man) shops for repairs and service. Those small shops might be in need of some business right now. You do want them around when this mess turns around (and it will eventually). Upgrades, maintenance, service, and repair work needed? Now might be a good time to make that call.

We all know that inactivity rots the airplane so it NEEDS to fly. Our basic skills also need to be kept sharp less they too 'rot'.

You can possibly fly GA and yet be Socially Responsible if proper precautions are taken. True Aviators and Airmen/Women always act responsibly. Self-Serve Fuel keeps you at a distance, and helps the airport stay viable.   While the $100 hamburger run has been hobbled by restaurants being closed except for take-out, with Spring temperatures you can 'take out' and eat in the sun. No restaurant? Pack a lunch and enjoy. A thorough spray cleaning with disinfectant for the keypad and nozzle touch surfaces at the fuel farm can help mitigate risk during a non-contact flight.

For the record, the voices of ATC on the radio are as helpful and efficient as always. Working with ATC is always a team effort so be prepared to do your share as the Controllers are a bit stretched and stressed. Get the airplane out of the hangar or off the tiedown once in a while. It will do both of you good.

Purposeful Distraction: There is a sense of calm and purpose that descends on every pilot when planning a flight. Your drive to the airport, the call to check the weather, the attentive pre-flight, taxi, all demand your attention. Your mind is hard targeted on flight, for you are the PIC. For many, the requirement to be absolutely focused is part of why we are attracted to aviation, as it means time 'fully away' from our daily concerns. Now, perhaps more than usual, some focus away from the day-to-day might be a good thing.   Many of us carry responsibilities that go far beyond the care and feeding of self. We have families, friends, co-workers/employees, neighbors and communities that COUNT on us being able bodied. Clearing one's head with a flight is not a bad idea if it can be conducted responsibly.

The other thing you can do with an airplane TODAY is to consider a humanitarian (yet non-contact flight) for an Animal Rescue organization. Those needs are not waiting for Covid-19 to settle down. If you're healthy and in need of some soul enhancing good feeling, few things beat liberating an animal from a bad situation. It can be done while preserving Social Distancing guidelines. Few things in life will bring you the peace in heart and satisfaction of helping save a furry critter.

Break:
Appreciation Time.
The folks running the medical system in the USA are rightly earning accolades for their dedication. Same goes for the First Responders such as Fire/Police/EMTs.   Public Works folks are on the job daily as your water, sewer, sanitation, gas and electric services are likely still on. A friendly wave or salute doesn't cost much. Let them know you're noticing them standing fast.

Small-Stuff:
You're buying groceries a couple times a week, hopefully taking care of your family and maybe helping another. Those stores are mostly local, staffed by younger local people, earning wages that by most standards are barely sustaining. Those stores are busy as hell, dealing with some shortages, and genuinely nasty clientele at times, but they're open.   The staff is working, and they are quietly helping hold society's respective 'stuff' together. Next time you're in the market, take a moment to remember these folks are also playing a role in their community at a difficult time. Might be worth a word of thanks.

There are a thousand 'small jobs' being done well by folks we may not consider vital players in our lives, till our lives are brought into focus by something as small as a virus.

Individual Concerns:

Leadership and Courage are 'contagious'. Every time you've taken someone aloft, they've placed their trust in your skill, sense, and discipline. As such, these are not unfamiliar roles. This is another chance to show by example and action that trust was well placed.

No matter what our personal opinion is on the efficacy or logic of the current protocols being emplaced, that does not relieve us of our responsibilities to our community. Aviators know this because we're part of a community that relies on each other to a great degree. Our individual strength reinforces the whole. This CPS community is an example.

Some may decide to self-isolate 100%, for the common good. Others may be looking for ways to be of service while maintaining safety. We all feel a need to be useful. Get creative on your own or make a call to a community center to see what needs might be best met with your particular folio of talents.

If you are able bodied and healthy, and have weighed the components, find out what needs your community has unfulfilled and see if you can be part of a solution. Small stuff counts! If you can shop for groceries, there are folks at risk that cannot, and not all of them have family that care. Use clean technique when shopping (you do reach through the plastic bag when checking the produce for ripeness!), and do some good for the folks in your neighborhood.

I believe 24/7 obsessing about the panic is not doing anyone much good.

We can huddle, or shine just a bit brighter. Family, community, aviation, and our country are all things we cherish. All of them may require a bit of personal sacrifice from time to time. This may be one of those times. We must care for the weak of body as well as those weak in will. Some folks will fall into despair through lack of contact, fright, uncertainty, or other human fragilities. If you know of someone in those straits, a phone call of a few minutes may be all that it takes to keep them from falling.

Right now the common substitute for a civil 'good-bye' is the well intended but semi-cryptic "Be Safe". Being safe need not mean adopting a lifeboat mentality. Such thinking is repugnant on its face and embraced only by the most base of society's lowest denominator.

Personal Responsibility:
With the increased amount of 'time spent at home', many folks are glued to their televisions. This Beta battle for our brains compounds worry and anxiety. It is mesmerizing, hollow, and incites real fear. Side effects are an expanding waist-line, depression, reduced muscle tone (both body and mind), and a tendency to be cowed into a FOMO (Fear of Missing Out) mentality. Folks are welded to their cell-phones (and when was the last time you disinfected that little hand-held petri dish?), laptops, iPADs, and it isn't necessarily the best strategy. Do not permit yourself to be ground-under in the seemingly endless assault.

Get some exercise! That means getting in a goodly walk, dusting off the Nautilus or Nordi-Track, PreCor, Jack LaLane power bands, or barbells and get in some work. We've got the time. Make it a family thing if possible and put some good music on in the background. There is no reason we all have to come out of this needing to lose ANOTHER 20 lbs. Some modern fitness equipment w/ pay-to-play app-based instruction such as the Peloton and Mirror are options, but other than being able to stare at some young model's beauty, the personal inspiration to do some cardio and lift some weight still must come from within. Get sweaty and when this is over folks will again see you as an inspiration.

Speaking of Family: Time spent now is going to be remembered forever, especially if you've children at an impressionable age. Make this 'together' time something they can point to with pride years from now. Play a game, read a book, cook a meal; something that brings the group together to accomplish a common goal can be incredibly valuable. YOU are their leader in every way.

Your family will find themselves positioned well both mentally and emotionally with leadership you provide now. Courage is a virtue as is ambition so long as it does not depend on using one's fellow man as a stepping stool. This is an opportunity to help form a stronger backbone.

Airmen will come out of this better than most, simply because we were better trained in the art of personal discipline going in. Self reliance, confidence in our abilities, and integrity are just traits that usually ascribed to Airmen, and this is a good time to allow those traits to guide your path. An Airman's Checklist-Discipline mentality goes a long way to ensuring that common sense hygiene, and the practice of clean technique, gives us all a good chance of coming through this mess.

Alongside others of similar mindset, we will recover, and thrive again. Your strength is the foundation for all that will follow.
